Just so everyone understands how this works, here's a short explanation and tournament info:
A Championship Tournament is one that qualifies you to play at a higher level tournament.
Central Cal's "C" Association Championship Tournament is held in Clovis this year. Only teams from our association are allowed to compete. The teams that place highest are "qualified" to go onto the Regional Tournament. The C Championship Tournament has a double elimination format as most Championship Tournaments do. The date for this tournament is July 9 - 10.
The top teams will qualify to go to San Diego for the Region 14 tournament. How many teams get to go, I don't know. It is usually the top five, but it could be different this year. Sandra Reed, the tournament director of Clovis Tournament will know.
Our association is part of Region 14 which covers all of California, Nevada and Hawaii. There are eight other associations along with us in Region 14. Each of the nine associations can send their qualified teams to the Region 14 C Championship Tournament in San Diego. Of course, not all of them do. (Don't expect to see a team from Hawaii.)
Region 14 is the only place that has a C program in the whole US of A. Because California is so big into softball, we are the only ASA body that has a C program. If you were in Ohio, Florida etc, there would be no such thing as C teams.
Since no one else has this program, the highest the C Championships goes is Regional. There is no "national" C tournament, it doesn't exist. (In contrast, "B" has a Western National and Eastern National, which shouldn't be called a "national" because it's only covers half of the nation... but I digress.)
What's great about our C Regional is that it is hosted by Southern Cal ASA as part of the Cal State Games. The Cal State Games is an Olympic style event ran by a non-profit group. This group runs an Olympic type event annually which has been is San Diego several years now. Softball is just on of many, many types of sports played at the Cal State Games. To get more info on the event, go to the website Calstategames.org.
The only negative I've heard about attending is this tournament is the Southern Cal are really, really good. (No surprise there.)
Finally, the one thing some of you only wanted to know: the date of the Regional Tournament in San Diego...... August 5 - 7th.
Just so you understand perfectly, the only way you play in San Diego is by placing high enough in Clovis. Qualified teams in Clovis will receive an entry packet for San Diego. DO NOT try to enter the tournament in advance. DO NOT try to make reservation at tournament hotels because they will not take you unless you are on the "qualified" team list.
